Ask the expert!
|
"What
are my chances of getting breast cancer again?"
It
depends upon the operation they choose to have. If a woman chooses breast
conservation (lumpectomy), in general, unless one has the BRCA gene (as
Angelina Joliee), the chance of a woman getting a second breast cancer is
between 1/2 and 1% for each year they live.
For
instance, if a 65 year old woman were to live to be 85 (20 more years), she
would have a 10-20% chance of getting a second breast cancer. This means she
would have an 80-90% chance of NOT getting another breast cancer.
On
the other hand if a 45 year old woman were to also live to be 85 (40 more
years), she would have a 20 to 40% chance of getting a second breast cancer.
Looked at the other way, she would have a 60 to 80% chance of not getting
another breast cancer.
Some
women choose bilateral mastectomies which reduces the risk of a second breast
cancer to about 5%.
